FAIRFIELD, CT (April 11, 2003) - The Wagner College women's lacrosse team outscored Sacred Heart University 9-2 in the second half en route to an 11-5 win in Northeast Conference play Friday afternoon. The loss halted Sacred Heart's four-game winning streak and drops the Pioneers to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in the NEC. Wagner's Leann Matta, Heather George, and Pam Sobieski each scored three times on the afternoon to help the Seahawks to their third-straight win, improving to 4-7 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
The Pioneers took control early on, opening a 2-0 lead just over six minutes into play on back-to-back goals by senior Michelle Bruckner (Carle Place, NY) and junior Christina Macchia (Carle Place, NY). The Seahawks struck back to knot the game at two apiece on George and Sobieski's first goals of the game. Sophomore Mary Romano (Baldwin, NY) gave SHU a one-goal lead at the half when she found the back of the net on a feed from junior Jackie Reichert (Nesconset, NY) at the 7:47 mark.
Sophomore JoAnn Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) gave the Pioneers a 4-2 lead coming out of halftime, scoring her only goal of the game, unassisted, at 26:33. That would be the last time a SHU player would score until just under nine minutes to play, as Wagner ran off seven-straight goals to take a 9-4 lead and put the game out of reach. Romano scored her second at 8:55 to play, but goals by Jill Pyzik and Matta in the final minutes thwarted any Pioneer comeback and propelled the Seahawks to the win.
For SHU, Romano led all scorers with three points on two goals and an assist. Macchia, Bruckner and Montesarchio had the only other goals for Sacred Heart. Junior Amy Lavoie (Nashua, NH) made eight saves on 30 shots in the loss. Seahawk goalie, London Jones, recorded four saves on 19 shots to pick-up the win.
Sacred Heart returns to action on Thursday, April 17th when they travel to face Long Island in Northeast Conference action starting at 3 pm.
