Brooklyn, NY (Apr. 17, 2003) - Sophomore Natalie Smith (Wantagh, NY) recorded a hat trick in the first half and added three assists for the Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team, which used eight-straight goals over both halves to post a 10-5 Northeast Conference victory over Long Island University, Thursday afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in conference play heading into this weekend's match-up with the Monmouth Hawks.
The Blackbirds took an early 2-1 lead seven minutes into the game, but the Pioneers took over from that point as their decisive spurt spanned more than 40 minutes for a 9-2 lead. Smith scored all her goals during that span, including her 11th of the season at the final whistle of the opening half to give Sacred Heart a 6-2 lead.
Senior Michelle Bruckner (Carle Place, NY) scored twice for Sacred Heart to give her a team-leading 26 goals, one better than sophomore JoAnn Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) who also netted a pair. Senior Jenn Girouard (South Windsor, CT), sophomore Mary Romano (Baldwin, NY) and junior Christina Macchia (Carle Place, NY) also scored.
Junior Amy Lavoie (Nashua, NH) was solid between the pipes for the Pioneers with 13 saves.
Sacred Heart will return to action this Saturday, April 19th, as they host Monmouth University starting at 12 noon.
