BALTIMORE, MD (April 21, 2003) - Maryland-Baltimore Count junior Jen Dragoni scored four goals and posted an assist to lead the Retrievers to a 15-8 victory over Sacred Heart University in Northeast Conference action Friday afternoon. With the loss, the Pioneers fall to 10-5 on the season and 5-2 in the league while UMBC improved to 7-8 overall and 6-1 in the NEC.
The Retrievers built what proved to be an insurmountable first half lead, going up 10-2 in the first half of play. Dragoni, senior Stephanie Allen, and freshmen Kelly Fiorani and Kate Worthington combined for seven goals within the first eleven minutes of play to stake UMBC with a lead they would never look back from. Sacred Heart's first tally came at 13:12 on senior Michelle Bruckner's (Carle Place, NY) first of two goals on the day. The Retrievers scored three more times in the first period, before Pioneer sophomore JoAnn Montesarchio (Cordlandt Manor, NY) added another goal for SHU just before the half.
The Pioneers found some offense in the second half, outscoring UMBC, 6-5, on goals from Bruckner, Montesarchio, junior Meghan Tucker (Carle Place, NY), junior Christina Macchia (Carle Place, NY), and sophomore Mary Romano (Baldwin, NY). Despite the increased offensive output, UMBC continued to generate a balanced offense, receiving contributions from Dragoni, Fiorani, freshman Jenny Kasper, and senior Lauren Traber, to come away with the 15-8 victory.
The Pioneers close out the regular season this Sunday, April 27th when they take on Mount St. Mary's at 1 pm. A win will give Sacred Heart a berth in next week's NEC Championship Tournament to be played on the Pioneer's home field.
