
Sacred Heart Loses, 9-8, to Mount St. Mary's in Overtime

EMMITSBURG, MD (April 27, 2003) - Mount St. Mary's Kim Keene scored her second goal of the game with 1:22 left in the second overtime to send the Mountaineers to a 9-8 win over Sacred Heart in Northeast Conference women's lacrosse action, ending the Pioneer's hopes of qualifying for the NEC Tournament. SHU finishes the season 10-6 overall and 5-3 in conference while the Mount improves to 8-9 overall and 5-3 in league play.
Mount St. Mary's was down 7-3 midway through the second half but fought all the way back to tie the game with just 11 seconds to play on a goal from Lauren Reymann. The comeback started at 13:22 to play when Kirby Day found the back of the net unassisted. The Mount proceeded to run off four-straight scores, culminating with Reymann's tying shot in the waning seconds. MSM kept it going into the overtime as Erin LaMotte picked-up her second goal of the day at 1:17 to give the Mountaineers the early advantage.
The Pioneers came right back as senior Michelle Bruckner (Carle Place, NY) buried her fourth of the game with 36 second to play in the first overtime to tie the game again at 8-8. But with 1:22 remaining in the second extra session, Keene worked her magic. Keene and LaMotte both finished with two goals while Day, Nicole DiAngelo, and Kelly Moran all had a goal and an assist on the day. Naomi Campano made nine saves in goal for the Mount.
Sacred Heart got out of the gates quickly, opening a 4-0 lead just nine minutes into play. Sophomore Mary Romano (Baldwin, NY) opened the scoring, Bruckner buried the next two and junior Christina Macchia (Carle Place, NY) followed with her only tally of the game. Junior Meghan Tucker (Carle Place, NY) and senior Jenn Girouard (South Windsor, CT) each found the back of the net just before the half. The Pioneers were outscored 4-1 in the second half, with their only goal coming off the stick of Bruckner. Junior Amy Lavoie (Nashua, NH) made eight saves in goal for Sacred Heart.
The 2003 Northeast Conference women's lacrosse championship tournament will be played at Sacred Heart University this Thursday, May 1st and Saturday, May, 3rd on Campus Field. The top four teams in the conference qualify and seeding will be announced later this evening.
