FAIRFIELD, CT (April 8, 2003) - The Sacred Heart University women's lacrosse team used an eight goal second half surge to break open a one-goal halftime lead and come away with their fourth-straight win, 14-7, over visiting Marist College on Tuesday afternoon. Senior Jenn Girouard (South Windsor, CT) put together a five-point afternoon to lead the way as the Pioneers improved to 7-3 overall on the year.
With the Sacred Heart holding a slim 6-5 lead at the half, Marist came out firing and tied the game at six all when junior Maria Reoch found the back of the net just thirty seconds into play. The Pioneers would answer right back just a 1:06 later, when senior Michelle Bruckner (Carle Place, NY) scored the first of her three goals to ignite a five-goal barrage that would put the score at 11-6 with just over thirteen minutes to play. Bruckner found the back of the net three times over the stretch.
Marist's Kelly Sullivan would snap the streak at the ten minute mark but SHU would have the final say, scoring three more times before the final horn to put the game away. Girouard finished with three goals and two assists while Bruckner and sophomore JoAnn Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) added four points apiece. Junior Meghan Tucker (Carle Place, NY) picked-up a season-high three goals in the win while sophomore Natalie Smith (Wantagh, NY) added two goals and an assist. Junior Amy Lavoie (Nashua, NH) made seven saves to earn her seventh win on the season.
For the Red Foxes, now 3-6 on the season, sophomore Brandi Petersen joined Reoch with two goals apiece in the loss. In goal, Mellanie Nai made five saves on 27 shots.
Sacred Heart returns to action on Friday, April 11th as they take on Wagner College in Northeast Conference action starting at 4 pm.
