The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team helped to give back to the local community this past weekend, raising funds to buy 4,500 turkeys for 28 outreach hunger programs in the Bridgeport area.
The two-mile "Turkey" walk was held on Saturday, November 6th at 9:30 am at Seaside Park in Bridgeport. This was the inaugural year of the event which was put on by The Bridgeport Council of Churches.
"It is always a rewarding experience to give back to the community and a great way for the players to build character," commented head coach Laura Korutz.
"It's not only rewarding to support a good cause, but to participate in an event for that cause makes it that much more meaningful," stated sophomore Maureen Hohn. "It was also a great team building experience getting the team together on a Saturday morning."
Last year 2,700 families were identified as needing assistance. That figure has risen about 70% this year.
William B. Meyer, Inc. was the official corporate sponsor was which donated $5,000 to sponsor the event.
