FAIRFIELD, CT (March 11, 2004) - Juniors JoAnn Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) and Natalie Smith (Wantagh, NY) and freshman Emily Tully (South Windsor, CT) all scored three times as the Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team ran away with a 15-0 win over Niagara University Thursday afternoon. Senior Amy Lavoie (Nashua, NH) made eight saves to earn the first shutout of her career as the Pioneers improve to 3-1 with the win.
Sacred Heart set the tone very early on as senior Jeanne Carroll (East Rockaway, NY) scored on a pass from Tully just 54 seconds in to the game. Tully scored her first collegiate point when she buried the first of her three goals at 23:50 on a free position attempt. Smith was next with her first of the day and the Pioneers where well on their way to a lopsided win.
Both Smith and Tully tallied two goals in addition to Carroll's two scores in the first half as the Pioneers held an 8-0 advantage at the break. The second half proved more of the same for the Purple Eagles, as SHU's offense picked right up where it left off. Smith scored her third of the day 1:54 into the second half for her team-leading 12th goal of the season.
Tully led all Pioneers with five points, collecting two assists to add to her three goals. Carroll finished with two goals and an assist while senior Jackie Reichert (Nesconset, NY) added a goal and two assists. Senior Meghan Tucker (Carle Place, NY) had two second half goals while freshman Maureen Hohn (Lutherville, MD) had a goal along with five draw controls, four groundballs and two caused turnovers.
SHU finished four-of-six on free position shots while outshooting the Purple Eagles, 24-11 on the day. The Pioneers also controlled the draw, controlling 12-of-17 in the win.
Niagara had some opportunities early but couldn't convert with Lavoie stopping three free position shots early on. Michelle Nucci and Andrea Patrick split time in goal with Patrick making four saves and picking up seven ground balls.
The Pioneers are back in action this Tuesday, March 16th as they host Holy Cross at 3 pm.
