FAIRFIELD, CT (March 18, 2004) - Senior Jackie Reichert (Nesconset, NY) and junior Natalie Smith (Wantagh, NY) scored four goals apiece as the Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team tallied a 13-9 win over the College of Holy Cross Thursday afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 4-1 to start the year with the win while the Crusaders fall to 2-5.
Holy Cross struck first on freshman Trish Stratton's 17th goal of the season from the free position just 1:54 into the game. The Crusaders built their lead to 3-1 on goals from senior Katie Britt and sophomore Carolyn Smirti with 16:48 to play. SHU quickly pulled within one, 3-2, just 38 seconds later on senior Meghan Tucker's (Carle Place, NY) free position goal. The game remained scoreless over the next eight minutes before Sacred Heart freshman Maureen Hohn (Lutherville, MD) tied the game at 3-3 on a feed from junior JoAnn Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) at the 7:49 mark.
Hohn's score set off a flurry of goals over the next six minutes. Holy Cross' DeeDee Banel gave the Crusaders the lead back at 6:25 off a pass from teammate Jacque Hastings. SHU pulled even once again off the stick of Montesarchio who took the draw and charged down the field scoring unassisted just 26 seconds later. The Crusaders grabbed the lead once again just a minute later on Smirti's second of the game.
The Pioneers would have the final say of the half as Reichert and Smith got their offense untracked. Reichert struck for her first of the day at 3:11, unassisted, to tie it at 5-5. Smith followed with her first of the day at 2:41 and the Pioneers carried a 6-5 lead into the break.
Reichert extended the lead to 7-5 at the start of the second half with her second free position goal at 27:13. Holy Cross wasted little time in knotting the game back up as Smirti buried two goals just 26 seconds apart in the 25th minute. The Smith/Reichert combination struck again this time giving Sacred Heart the lead for good.
The Crusaders were able to slice the lead back to one, 9-8, at the 15:13 mark, but four straight SHU goals over the next 11 minutes put the game away. In addition to Smith and Reichert's four goals, Montesarchio finished with a goal and two assists. Smith added an assist to her four goals for a five point afternoon and has now scored at least three goals in four of the Pioneers five games this year.
Holy Cross's Smirti had four goals followed by Sutton who tallied three and an assist. Katie Britt scored a goal with an assist in the loss.
Sacred Heart closes out a six-game homestand this Saturday, March 20th taking on New Hampshire at 11:00 am. The men's lacrosse team will take on Dartmouth following the women's game at 2 pm.
