STONY BROOK, NY (March 23, 2004) - Junior Christina Macchia (Carle Place, NY) scored four goals to lead the Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team to a 12-7 win over Stony Brook University, Tuesday afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 5-2 and snap Stony Brook's two-game winning streak dropping the Seawolves to 2-2 on the year.
Macchia put her stamp on the game early on, scoring twice in the first 10 minutes of play as SHU built up a 6-1 lead at the half way point of the first half. Stony Brook's Carlee Buck pulled her team to within 6-2 at 7:52 but Macchia struck again, scoring back to back goals 50 seconds apart to give the Pioneers an 8-2 advantage. A late goal by SBU's Katie Pullen's with 35 ticks on the clock drew the Seawolves to within 8-3 at the break.
The Pioneers struck early in the second half as senior Jeanne Carroll (East Rockaway, NY) put the Pioneers up 9-3 only 1:02 into play with her third goal of the day. Stony Brook looked to be clawing their way back as Buck answered with her second goal of the game and Andrea Venditti scored less than a minute later to put the Seawolves within 9-5.
Freshman Maureen Hohn (Lutherville, MD) extended the lead back to five on her seventh goal of the year. SBU's Amy Taylor cut it back to four, 10-6, just four minutes later, scoring unassisted. That would be as close as the Seawolves would come as junior JoAnn Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) scored a pair of goals less than a minute apart to seal the win for Sacred Heart.
In addition to Macchia's four goal effort, Montesarchio finished with three goals and an assist for SHU. Senior goalie Amy Lavoie (Nashua, NH) made four saves to earn the win.
Sacred Heart will open Northeast Conference play this Friday, March 26th as they travel to St. Francis (PA) for a 3:30 pm start.
