
Pioneer Women's Lacrosse Net 12-7 Win Over Davidson

FAIRFIELD, CT (March 4, 2004) - Junior Natalie Smith (Wantagh, NY) and freshman Maureen Hohn (Lutherville, MD) combined for nine goals as the Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team posted a 12-7 win over Davidson College Thursday afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 2-0 to start the year while the Wildcats fall to 1-4.
Sacred Heart controlled play over the first half, running out to a 4-0 lead just over 10 minutes into play. Hohn opened the scoring followed by junior JoAnn Montesarchio's (Cortlandt Manor, NY) second of the year. Hohn struck again at the 21:46 mark unassisted and senior Jackie Reichert converted her free position shot two minutes later to give the Pioneers an insurmountable lead.
The Wildcats finally got on the board at the 19:25 mark when Millie McKeachie connected on a pass from Lindsay Frank. The Pioneers answered back with three goal run started by Hohn's third goal of the afternoon. Smith got her game started with two-straight as SHU went up 7-1. Brandon Jacob notched Davidson's second goal of the day but a late goal by SHU senior Christina Macchia (Carle Place, NY) with 18 seconds left gave the Pioneers a commanding 8-2 lead at the break.
Smith and Hohn struck again in the second half giving Sacred Heart a 10-3 lead with 14:05 to play. Smith was unstoppable, scoring twice more and assisting on another SHU goal to put the game out of reach 12-5 with just over five minutes to go. Two late goals by Davidson's Alex Egan and Eloise Grose produced the final 12-7 score.
Smith finished the day with a career-high five goals and six points in the win. Hohn had the first four goals of her career while also picking up at team-high five groundballs with five draw controls. Junior goalkeeper Maggie Brauer (Blauvelt, NY) recorded five saves to pick-up her second win on the year.
For Davidson, Grose finished with two goals and two assists while Jacob notched two goals of her own. Goalkeeper Leslie Smith made three saves in the loss.
The Pioneers continue their six-game home stand on Tuesday, March 9th as they host Siena at 3 pm.
