
SHU Women's LAX Battle to 12-9 Win at Wagner for key NEC Win

STATEN ISLAND, NY (April 23, 2004) - The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse teams got four points apiece from juniors Natalie Smith (Wantagh, NY) and Christina Macchia (Carle Place, NY) and senior Jackie Reichert (Nesconset, NY) as the Pioneers overcame a halftime deficit to battle their way to a 12-9 win at Wagner College Friday afternoon. This afternoon's win pushes SHU to 10-5 overall and 4-2 in the Northeast Conference, inching them closer to a berth in the post-season tournament.
In the back and forth game, Sacred Heart jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a free position goal by Smith before Macchia tallied a marker after taking a pass from Reichert. The teams swapped the next six goals over the next 10:40 before Wagner scored three consecutive times to close out the first half with a 6-5 advantage. In the three-goal flurry, Wagner received goals by senior Jill Pyzik, sophomore Kim Herzog and junior Leann Matta.
SHU scored four of the first six goals in the opening sixteen minutes of the second half to take a 9-8 lead. Smith and Jeanne Carroll (E. Rockaway, NY) each scored in the opening five minutes of the second half before Pyzik tallied an unassisted goal to tie the game at 7-7. The Pioneers scored two more times to take a 9-7 advantage but the closest Wagner would get would be 9-8 after freshman Breanna Burgess scored her second tally of the game.
SHU notched two goals in the final four minutes to seal the victory when Maureen Hohn (Lutherville, MD) and Reichert closed out the day's scoring. Senior goalkeeper Amy Lavoie (Nashua, NH) made four saves in the cage to earn the victory for the Pioneers.
Smith finished with four goals on the day while Reichert picked up three with an assist. Macchia had two goals and two assists to round out Sacred Heart's multiple point scorers.
The Pioneers close out the regular season on Sunday, April 25th at Monmouth at 1:00 pm with playoff implications on the line.
