
Pioneers Fall in Regular Season Finale, 13-4, at Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ (April 25, 2004) - The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team was shut out in the first half as Monmouth posted a 13-4 victory over the Pioneers in Northeast Conference action Sunday afternoon at Kessler Field. The win earned the Hawks the No. 2 seed at next weekend's NEC Tournament to be held on their home turf. Despite the loss, Sacred Heart claimed the No. 4 seed in the tournament with Wagner's loss to Quinnipiac earlier in the day.
Monmouth jumped out to the early lead as Kaitlyn Robinson scored on an assist from Carolyn Raveia less than three minutes into the game. With in a 36 second span, Laura Levins and Katie Degen found the back of the cage to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead with 22:30 remaining in the half. Jennie Versaggi inflated the cushion to 4-0 with 21 minutes remaining and the contest went into a 14 minute lull before Degen, Jeanette Stott and Levins scored in the final eight minutes of the half to give Monmouth a 7-0 lead at the intermission.
Sacred Heart, 10-6 overall and 4-3 in the NEC ended their scoring drought just three minutes into the second half as JoAnn Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) scored on a free position opportunity to trim the lead to 7-1. Monmouth responded with four goals in the next six minutes to build an 11-1 advantage. Monmouth eventually pushed the margin to 13-1 before the Pioneers would score the last three goals of the game. Montesarchio scored her second with 7:29 remaining and less than one minute later Maureen Hohn (Lutherville, MD) scored an unassisted goal. The final goal of the game came from Meghan Tucker (Carle Place, NY) with 1:33 showing on the clock.
Both teams are back in action on Friday, April 30th as the Hawks host the Northeast Conference tournament. No. 1 seed and NEC regular-season champion Mount St. Mary's plays No. 4 seeded Pioneers while Monmouth will be matched up with the No. 3 seed Quinnipiac.
