
SHU Women's Lacrosse Edge Long Island, 7-6, in NEC Tilt

FAIRFIELD, CT (April 8, 2004) - The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team found themselves down two goals with just under 15 minutes to play but battled back for two unanswered goals en route to a 7-6 Northeast Conference win over visiting Long Island University Thursday afternoon. The win snaps a two-game slide and improves the Pioneers to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the NEC. The Blackbirds fall to 3-8 overall and 1-3 in the league with the loss.
The two teams traded goals over the first 20 minutes of action with the Pioneers holding a 3-2 advantage at the 10:18 mark. SHU extended their lead to 4-2 with just 53 seconds to play in the half on senior Jackie Reichert's (Nesconset, NY) 12th goal of the year.
The Pioneers came out strong to start the second half, building a three goal lead, 5-2, just under four minutes into play as senior Jeanne Carroll (East Rockaway, NY) buried her second goal of the game off a feed from senior Meghan Tucker (Carle Place, NY). The Blackbird clawed their way back into the game with 23 minutes to go when sophomore Jackie McCormick started a LIU run with her 20th goal of the season.
Long Island scored four unanswered over to take a 6-5 lead with just under 15 minutes to play. SHU junior Natalie Smith (Wantagh, NY) pulled the Pioneers even at 13:27 on an assist from fellow junior JoAnn Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY). Freshman Maureen Hohn (Lutherville, MD) fired home the game-winner just over three minutes later as she collected a loose ball at midfield, sprinted toward goal and beat LIU goalie Patricia Parker.
Carroll led the Pioneers with two goals on the afternoon while Montesarchio and senior Christina Macchia (Carle Place, NY) added a goal and an assist apiece. Senior goalkeeper Amy Lavoie (Nashua, NH) made seven saves in collecting her fourth win on the year.
SHU returns to action this Saturday, April 10th as they close out the non-conference portion of their schedule hosting Marist College at 10 a.m.
