FAIRFIELD, CT (September 23, 2004) - The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team will take part in three tournaments during this fall semester starting this Friday when they play in the Fairfield University Fall Festival with Long Island, Manhattan, Holy Cross and the host Stags. The event will run from 12:00 until 3:00 pm.
The Pioneers are among 15 teams that will participate in the Hofstra Tournament on Saturday, October 2nd. SHU joins Brown, Bucknell, CW Post, Drexel, Lafayette, LIU, UMass, Monmouth, Quinnipiac, Rutgers, Stonehill, Stony Brook, Wagner and the host Pride in Hempstead, NY. SHU wraps up its fall tournament play on Saturday, October 16th with a trip to Holy Cross to take on teams from Stonehill, Bryant College and the host Crusaders. This year's Alumni Game is slated for Sunday, October 24th on Campus Field starting at 9:30 am.
This year's team welcomes the return of three All-Northeast Conference performers from a year ago in seniors Natalie Smith (Wantagh, NY), JoAnn Montesarchio (Cortandt Manor, NY) and Lindsay Travis (Mahopac, NY). Smith was the Pioneers leading scorer last spring, tallying 44 points on 36 goals and eight assists. Montesarchio was second on the squad with 33 points coming off 24 goals and a team-leading nine assists. Travis was the anchor of the SHU defense with 36 ground balls and 24 caused turnovers.
Also returning this season is sophomore midfielder Maureen Hohn (Lutherville, MD) who put up 22 points on 17 goals and five assists while also leading the team in draw controls with 50. Senior Jamie Pettit (Baldwin, NY) and sophomore Jessica McDonough (Carmel, NY) return to help Travis solidify this year's defensive unit. The Pioneers lose the services of second team All-NEC goalkeeper Amy Lavoie to graduation, but the return of senior Maggie Brauer (Blauvelt, NY) will help to soften the blow. Brauer posted a 4-01 record in six games played last season. She also posted a 7.50 goals against average with 28 saves.
The 2005 season gets underway on February 27th when the Pioneers host the University of Vermont at 1:00 pm.
