FAIRFIELD, CT (February 27, 2005) - Sacred Heart senior JoAnn Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) and sophomore Brianna Bubeck (Bethlehem, NY) scored four points apiece to lead the Pioneers to a 12-7 win over the University of Vermont Sunday afternoon in the season opener for both teams. The Pioneers built a 7-2 lead in the first half and withstood a late Catamount rally to earn the victory.

Bubeck took a feed from junior Emily Tully (South Windsor, CT) and deposited it in the back of the net for the quick tally. SHU struck again at the 27:39 mark when freshman Katie Salamone (Baltimore, MD) notched her first collegiate goal, unassisted, for a 2-0 advantage.
The Catamounts broke into the scoring column just under three minutes later on a Ashleigh Wilson free position goal but SHU scored the next five straight to hold a commanding 7-1 lead with just over two minutes left in the half. UVM snapped the Pioneer streak with 28 seconds left in the half on a Vanessa Cox free position goal.

SHU freshman Alyssa Harris (Kings Park, NY) scored less than a minute later but two more scores by UVM sliced the lead to 11-6. Sacred Heart's Salamone put the game away with her second goal of the day with 3:46 to play and a late Vermont tally produce the final 12-7 margin.
