
Pioneer Women's LAX Runs Past Central Connecticut 16-5

FAIRFIELD, CT (March 26, 2005) - The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team rang up 10 first half goals en route to a 16-5 win over Central Connecticut Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers got five goals from sophomore Brianna Bubeck (Bethlehem, NY) as they picked up their first Northeast Conference win on the year and improve to 4-3 overall. The Blue Devils fall to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the league.
The Pioneers scored eight unanswered goals over the first 15 minutes of the first half. Senior JoAnn Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) scored three times on their run while Bubeck and sophomore Heather Gureckis (Nashua, NH) each had two markers. CCSU's Abby Capobianco got the Blue Devils on the board with 11:37 to play in the half, scoring from the free position.
SHU tacked on two more before the end of the half, one off the stick of junior Emily Tully (South Windsor, CT) and one from sophomore Maureen Hohn (Lutherville, MD). The Pioneers out shot Central 21-7 over the first 30 minutes, while also winning 11 of 12 draw controls.
Tully made it a 10 goal advantage, 11-1, 24 seconds into the second half, scoring her third goal of the day, unassisted. Central's Abby Hayes scored the next Blue Devil goal at 27:51, on a pass from Julia Steier. SHU's Montesarchio tallied her fourth scored of the day just over a minute later before two more CCSU goals cut the lead to 12-4.
Bubeck came up with three straight goals for the Pioneers, one unassisted, followed by Hohn's second from the free position to build a 16-4 lead with just over five minutes to play. Central's Hayes recorded the last score of the day at 2:02, her third of the match, for the final 16-5 score.
Sacred Heart's Bubeck added an assist to her five goals to finish the game with six total points. In goal, senior Maggie Brauer (Blauvelt, NY) and junior Candice Celebre (Lake Grove, NY) each played a half. Brauer started and finished with five saves while Celebre made six stops in the second half.
The Pioneers return to action on Tuesday, March 29th when they host Lehigh at 4:00 pm.
