FAIRFIELD, CT (March 29, 2005) - The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team scored 11 first half goals and withstood a late Lehigh rally to come away with a 14-13 win over the Mountain Hawks Tuesday afternoon. Sacred Heart freshman Katie Salamone (Baltimore, MD) scored a season-high five goals to lead the Pioneers to their fifth win on the season while the Mountain Hawks dropped their sixth-straight game and fall to 3-6 overall.
Lehigh came out on fire, scoring on their first two shots of the game. Freshman Christine Smith struck first at 29:41 followed by senior Barrie Cominsky at 29:22. Salamone scored her first to the Pioneers quickly bounce back just 1:17 later. The two teams traded goals over the next 14 minutes and senior Sarah Starsoneck gave Lehigh a 5-3 lead with 12:32 to play.
Sacred Heart's Brianna Bubeck started an eight goal scoring frenzy that closed the half where JoAnn Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) scored back to back goals and Salamone and Natalie Smith (Wantagh, NY) had two goals apiece. Heather Gureckis (Nashua, NH) finished off the run at 3:36 sending the Pioneers into the half with an 11-5 advantage.
Lehigh would start the second half with a pair of goals by Elizabeth Gill to cut the SHU lead to 11-7. Sacred Heart's Salamone and Gurekis came back with two of their own to bounce the lead back to six, 13-7 with just over twenty minutes to play. Lehigh used another run, this time three-straight, from Cominsky, Kara Chalanick and Vienna Pharaon to pull within 13-10.
Gurekis came up with her third of the day off a feed from Hohn at the 9:01 mark in what proved to be the last Sacred Heart goal of the day. Lehigh made it interesting down the stretch scoring three goals in the final 5:22 to pull within one. Pharaon picked up her second at 5:22 off a feed from Amy Chamberlain after a failed SHU clear. Another Pioneer turnover and failed clear led to Chamberlain's first goal of the day at 2:27, cutting the lead to 14-12. Chalanick got the Mountain Hawks to within one with 38 seconds left but SHU took the ensuing draw and ran off the remaining time.
In addition to Salamone's five goal day, Gureckis scored a career-best three goals. Montesarchio and Smith finished with two markers and two assists. Senior Maggie Brauer (Blauvelt, NY) made eight saves to earn the win.
Sacred Heart returns to action this Friday, April 1st when they host Long Island University in Northeast Conference action starting at 4:00 pm.
