POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 13, 2005) - Sacred Heart freshman Katie Salamone (Baltimore, MD) rang up five goals to lead the Pioneers to a 17-10 win over Marist College Wednesday night. SHU improves to 8-5 overall with the win.
Salamone put Sacred Heart on the board just 30 seconds into the contest but Marist senior captain Christine Connell evened the score less than a minute later. Salamone then converted back-to-back goals to jumpstart a 4-0 Pioneer run, resulting in a 5-1 lead. Freshman Lindsey Diener jump started the Marist offense with a free-position goal, followed quickly by another free position winner by Lauren Serge. The Pioneers then went on a fiery five-goal run before a Marist goal with just four seconds left in the half, cut the SHU lead to 10-4, at the break.
Senior Natalie Smith (Wantagh, NY) kicked off the attack in the second for the Pioneers scoring two quick goals with a Red Fox point in between by Serge. The teams would continue to trade goals for the balance of the second half, as senior JoAnn Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY), Sacred Heart's leading scorer, had back-to-back goals to help stall any Marist offensive comeback.
Sacred Heart's Maggie Brauer recorded 10 saves in goal for the Pioneers, while five different players had at least two goals, led by Salamone who added an assist to her five goal night. Montesarchio finished with four goals and an assist. Sophomore Brianna Bubeck (Bethlehem, NY) scored four times and also raked in five groundballs.
The Pioneers return to Northeast Conference play this Sunday, April 17th when they travel to Monmouth.
