
SHU Women's Lax Close out 2005 with 15-2 win Over Robert Morris

FAIRFIELD, CT (April 24, 2005) - Sacred Heart senior JoAnn Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) scored three goals and handed out three assists as the Pioneers came away with a 15-2 win over Robert Morris on "Senior Day" Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers finished out the 2005 season with a 10-6 overall record and at 4-4 in the Northeast Conference.
Montesarchio scored her first goal at the 27:27 mark and the Pioneers were off and running. SHU scored nine-straight goals before the Colonials could answer. The senior midfielder scored twice on the run and assisted on back-to-back Maureen Hohn (Lutherville, MD) goals. Robert Morris got on the scoreboard at the 3:19 mark as Josephine Zizic buried a pass from Bethany Mahaffey.
The Pioneers closed the half with scored from junior Emily Tully (South Windsor, CT) and sophomore Heather Gureckis (Nashua, NH) to lead 11-1 at the break. SHU out shot the Colonials 17-5 over the first 30 minutes and caused 13 turnovers.
Gureckis opened the scoring for SHU in the second half, scoring her game-high fourth goal of the game off a feed from sophomore Brianna Bubeck (Bethlehem, NY). Senior defenseman Jamie Pettit (Baldwin, NY) followed with her first career goal to give SHU a 13-1 lead. RMU's Pamela DeGuffroy scored a goal on a free position shot for the Colonials lone goal of the half.
SHU closed out the game with a pair of free position scores from Montesarchio and sophomore Elizabeth Fisher (New Milford, CT), who scored her first career goal.
Robert Morris also finished the season on Sunday, closing the year 0-14 overall and 0-8 in league play.
Before the start of today's game, Sacred Heart honored five graduating seniors who made their final appearance in a Pioneer uniform this afternoon. Montesarchio ends her career as the Pioneers all-time leading scorer in Division I with 157 career points. She ranks third on the all-time scoring list in the SHU record book. Goalkeeper Maggie Brauer (Blauvelt, NY) owns a career 16-9 record in goal for the Pioneers with a 9.17 goals against average. Lindsay Travis (Mahopac, NY) has recorded 84 ground balls with 44 caused turnovers in her three years at SHU. Pettit has 59 grounders and 41 caused turnovers in her career. Natalie Smith (Wantagh, NY) ranks eighth on the all-time scoring list with 111 career points.
