SCHENECTADY, NY (April 5, 2005) - Senior JoAnn Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) scored twice and assisted on three others to lead the Sacred Heart Pioneers to an 8-5 win at Siena College Tuesday night. In a game played at Union College, SHU got out in front 7-4 in the first half and held on to improve to 7-4 overall on the year.
The Saints struck first, opening a 2-0 lead on goals by Christina Pampalone and Amy Schoonmaker in the first 5:50 of play. The Pioneers struck back with a 4-0 run started by sophomore Brianna Bubeck (Bethlehem, NY) who finished a pass from senior Natalie Smith (Wantagh, NY) at 23:13. By the 20:26 mark, the Pioneers had a 4-2 lead and on their way to victory.
Montesarchio scored her first off a feed from Bubeck at 22:23. Sophomore Maureen Hohn (Lutherville, MD) followed at 20:55 from Montesarchio and the senior came up with her second just 29 seconds later, unassisted.
Siena cut the lead to 4-3 on Michelle Eide's free position goal with 14:36 on the clock but another SHU run built gave the Pioneers some breathing room. Freshman Alyssa Harris (Kings Park, NY) scored from the free position at 12:59 followed by junior Emily Tully's (South Windsor, CT) marker at 11:07. Hohn chipped in with her second of the day from Montesarchio with 5:56 to give SHU a 7-3 lead.
Pampalone added her second goal just before half and then scored the Saint's only goal in the second half to get Siena to within 7-5. Harris put the game away with her second goal of the night with 6:48 left to send SHU home with an 8-5 victory.
Sacred Heart senior Maggie Brauer (Blauvelt, NY) made a season-high 13 saves, nine in the second half, to earn the victory in the cage for the Pioneers. In addition to her five points, Montesarchio picked-up five ground balls and caused four turnovers in the win.
The Pioneers return to action this Friday, April 8th when they host Wagner College in NEC action at 4:00 pm.
