
Pioneers Fall to Marist, 12-8

FAIRFIELD, CT - Sophomore Jessica O'Brien (Wantagh, NY) scored three times and assisted on another, while goalie Liz Burkhard (Wantagh, NY) made 13 saves to lead the Marist College women's lacrosse team to a 12-8 road win at Sacred Heart University on Tuesday afternoon.
O'Brien and freshman Megan White each scored goals in the first five minutes to give the Red Foxes a 2-0 lead. Junior Maureen Hohn (Lutherville, MD) and Mary Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) evened it at 2-2 for the Pioneers with 20 minutes left in the first half. Marist, 1-0, scored four more times before the half to lead 6-3 at the intermission.
Marist scored the first four goals of the second half, two of them from sophomore Val Amodeo (Northport, NY), to take a commanding 10-3 lead 11 minutes into the period.
Sacred Heart finally got the offense rolling and scored the next five in a row to close to 10-8. Hohn had the last SHU tally with 9:22 to go in the game. Junior Brianna Bubeck (Bethlehem, NY) had two scores during the Pioneer run.
O'Brien dashed the Pioneer hopes with an unassisted clinching goal with just 1:11 left in the game. Sophomore Lindsey Diener (Nanuet, NY) put the icing on the cake for Marist with her first goal of the season with :14 left.
Sacred Heart, 0-2, got eight saves from senior goalie Candice Celebre (Lake Grove, NY).
