
Women's LAX Falls to Stony Brook, 20-5

Stony Brook, NY - Danielle Werner collected seven points on five goals and two assists while Jill Gridley added four goals as the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team cruised to its fourth straight win with a 20-5 victory over Sacred Heart on Tuesday afternoon at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. With the win, the Seawolves improve to 4-1 on the season, while the Pioneers fell to 0-3.
The Seawolves took control early, finding the back of the net nine times in the opening 21 minutes before allowing a Sacred Heart goal. Werner scored just over a minute into the contest and Kaitlin Leggio followed with her 11th goal of the season 1:45 later to make it 2-0. Werner struck again at the 21:50 mark just after a free position goal by Brooke Souder. Stephanie DeGennaro, Amy Hallion and Gridley each scored a goal and Amy Taylor added three markers in the closing 15:28 to stake Stony Brook to a 10-1 lead at the break.
Stony Brook's offense remained hot in the second as Carlee Buck scored between a pair of Gridley goals to push the lead to 13-1. After an Elizabeth Ottey (Baltimore, MD) tally at 20:20 made it 13-2, the Seawolves rattled off four straight goals over the next eight minutes to make it 17-2 as SB cruised to the victory.
Taylor scored each of her three goals in the first half, while Brooke Souder added two goals and two assists. Jen Sandtorv (4-1) earned the victory in net, allowing one goal while turning away seven shots in the first half. Gina DeNezzo came on in the second half and made one stop.
Ottey scored three times for the Pioneers, while Mary Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) added a pair of goals and Brianna Bubeck (Bethlehem, NY) totalled two assists. Candice Celebre (Lake Grove, NY) (0-3) made 13 saves in the loss.
The Pioneers are back in action Sunday when they return home to face Manhattan. Game time at campus field is 1:00 pm.
