Lehigh used four goals from junior Amy Chamberlain, including the game-winner, to fight their way to an 11-10 victory over visiting Sacred Heart on Tuesday afternoon. SHU falls to 1-8 with the loss.
Lehigh held a 31-20 advantage in shots on the afternoon and scooped up 30 ground balls to Sacred Heart's 16. The Mountain Hawks won 13 draw controls, while the Pioneers took ten, and Lehigh caused 21 turnovers for the game.
Sacred Heart got on the board first when Maureen Hohn took a pass from Heather Gureckis at the 28:11 mark and beat Begina for a 1-0 lead. Chamberlain tied the game with her 18th goal of the season at the 24:53 clip, but Mary Montesarchio soon put the visitors back in front at 2-1. Roth scored her second goal of the season at the 19:35 mark to tie the score at two, and Kara Chalanick then put the Brown and White ahead with her fourth score of the year at the 16:38 mark of the opening half.
Hohn and Emily Tully would score back-to-back goals for the Pioneers however, putting them ahead 4-3 with 13:41 left. King then brought the game to yet another tie as she took a pass from Chalanick and found the back of the net to make the score 4-4. Gureckis scored two straight goals for the Pioneers and the visitors quickly went in front 6-4, but Chamberlain scored a huge goal with just 28 ticks left in the half, to bring the Mountain Hawks to within a single goal at 6-5 heading into the halftime break.
King opened the second half with her ninth goal of the season and the game was tied. Not for long though, as Brianna Bubeck scored on a free position shot to put Sacred Heart back in front, this time at 8-7. Freshmen Tess McGrath and Sara MacIntyre would put Lehigh on top however, with back-to-back scores, making the score 8-7 Lehigh with 25:37 left.
Tully then tied the game yet again, before Chamberlain put the Mountain Hawks up 9-8 with her third score of the day at the 21:29 mark. After nearly nine minutes of scoreless ball, the Pioneers struck again, this time as Elizabeth Ottey scored two straight goals, putting the visitors in front 10-9 with 8:57 to go. Freshman Meagan Tenety would tie the game with her eighth score of the season at the 5:26 mark, setting the stage for Chamberlain's game-winner, which came via a free position shot with just 3:38 remaining. Lehigh was forced to play keep away for the final few minutes.
The Pioneers return to action on Friday afternoon when they get back to Northeast Conference play at Wagner.
