Pioneers Return to NEC play at Wagner.. The Pioneers are back in Northeast Conference action on Friday afternoon when they travel to Staten Island, New York to face the Wagner Seahawks. SHU posted a 10-8 win in their NEC opener last Sunday at Long Island but lost 11-10 last time out at Lehigh. The Seahawks are coming off a 14-8 win over Manhattan on Wednesday after falling in the league opener at the Mount, 14-8.
The Series... Sacred Heart leads the all-time series 5-3. The Seahawks have won three of the last four meetings after snapping a four-game SHU winning streak in the series in 2002. Wagner posted a 13-11 win at Campus Field last season. SHU won the first-ever meeting between the two schools back on April 4, 1999, a 15-11 decision at home.
Up Next... The Pioneers are back at home next weekend to host NEC foes Mount St. Mary's (4/7) and Monmouth (4/9).
Last Meeting with Wagner... Wagner built an 8-1 lead in the first half and withstood a furious Sacred Heart comeback to come away with a 13-11 Northeast Conference victory on April 8, 2005. Wagner junior Heather George scored six goals to lead the Seahawks. The Seahawks took control early were off on a 7-0 run before SHU could answer. SHU would finally break through at the 9:18 mark but Wagner wasted little time in answering and went into the half with an 8-1 advantage. Wagner out shot Sacred Heart 17-8 in the half and forced 13 Pioneer turnovers. It would be a tale of two halves for Sacred Heart as the Pioneers were the ones who dominated play for much of the second half. After the two teams traded goals in the opening minutes, the Pioneers dominated the next four minutes of action, scoring four unanswered goals to get within 9-6 with 20:47 to play in the game. Wagner stopped the run and made it 10-6 on George's fourth score of the afternoon with just over 15 minutes to play. SHU used another run to slice the lead down to just one, 10-9, with 12:51 left in the game. George again gave the Seahawks an answer, scoring her fifth goal of the afternoon. With the Pioneers within 12-10, George provided the clincher just 40 seconds later, scoring her sixth goal on a free position shot to all but ice it.
Scouting the Seahawks... The Wagner women's lacrosse team is 2-6 on the year with wins over Iona, 19-8, and Manhattan, 14-8. The Seahawks are 0-1 in the Northeast Conference, falling to Mount St. Mary's, 14-5, last weekend. The Seahawks are powered by Heather George who leads the team and the league with 29 goals. She adds two assists to that total for 31 points through eight games this year. Cara Gonzalez leads the team in assists with eight to go along with her 10 goals. The Seahawks have Amy Jones in goal who has played every minute while recording a 12.84 goals against average with 98 saves.
Last Time Out... Lehigh used four goals from junior Amy Chamberlain, including the game-winner, to fight their way to an 11-10 victory over visiting Sacred Heart. The game was back and forth with neither team jumping ahead by more than two goals at any time. The Pioneers led at the break 6-5 but the two teams would trade the lead again in the second half. SHU trailed 8-7 with nearly 20 minutes left in the game but both teams went into dry spell offensively. After nearly nine minutes of scoreless ball, the Pioneers struck again, this time as Elizabeth Ottey scored two straight goals, putting the visitors in front 10-9 with 8:57 to go. Freshman Meagan Tenety would tie the game with her eighth score of the season at the 5:26 mark, and Chamberlain provided the game-winner, which came via a free position shot with just 3:38 remaining. Lehigh was forced to play keep away for the final few minutes to secure the win.
History... This is the Pioneer's eighth year of competition in the Northeast Conference. Sacred Heart has qualified for the NEC Tournament four times and posts a 72-63 Division I record. The Pioneers have posted 10 wins in each of the last three years and have not had a losing season since 1998.
