FAIRFIELD, CT (March 14, 2007) - Sacred Heart got five goals between senior Brianna Bubeck (Bethlehem, NY) and junior Liz Ottey (Baltimore, MD) but the Pioneers gave up 10 second half goals as Stony Brook came away with a 16-12 win Wednesday afternoon on Campus Field. The Pioneers have lost three-in-a-row and are 1-3 on the year. Stony Brook improves to 4-1.
SHU got out to a 2-1 lead 10 minutes in on an Amanda Williams (Monroe, CT) 8meter free position goal and an unassisted tally from senior Maureen Hohn (Lutherville, MD), her first on the year. The Seawolves rattled off three-straight scores, two from Katie Savino to pull ahead 4-2 with 13:23. Both teams went scoreless for the next six minutes before Bubeck tacked on a pair of scores at 7:56 and 7:03 to pull the game even.
After a SBU goal at 3:23, SHU's Ottey and Williams notched scored to put the Pioneers in front 6-5 with 45 seconds left. The Seawolves won the ensuing draw and Amy Taylor scored unassisted just eight seconds later to send the teams to the locker room tied at 6-6. Despite holding a 22-11 advantage on shots and forcing SHU to clear just eight of 15 attempts, the Pioneers hit on both of their free position attempts and got nine first half saves from freshman Chelsea Wagner (Aurora, CO) to stay in the game.
Stony Brook grabbed control of the game in the first 10 minutes of action in the second half, outscoring SHU 4-1 to take a 10-7 lead with 20:43. Another long scoreless stretch between the two teams, 10:37, gave way when SHU sophomore Mary Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) scored off a feed from Ottey to cut the lead to two, 10-8.
A three-goal run by Stony Brook that started at the 5:25 mark put the game away. Taylor scored her fourth goal of the day to start it and Emily Jaissle buried back-to-back goals at 4:33 and 3:53, her first two of the year, to give her team a 13-8 lead. Bubeck's third goal at 3:21 gave SHU some hope for a late rally but Taylor tacked on her fifth of the afternoon just 39 seconds later to thwart the rally. The final 1:20 featured a flurry of goals, three by SHU and a pair by Stony Brook to close out the scoring.
Bubeck finished with three goals while winning six draws. Ottey scored two goals with two assists in the loss. Junior Katie Salamone (Baltimore, MD) and Williams each scored a pair. Wagner finished the game making a season-best 13 saves and picked up five ground balls off Seawolf turnovers.
The Pioneers turned the ball over 33 times in the game while finishing just 15 of 25 on clear attempts.
The Seawolves got six points on five goals and assist from Taylor who also picked up a pair of grounders, won three draws and caused four turnovers. Kaitlin Leggio did a fine job setting up her teammates with four assists to go with a pair of markers. She added five grounders and four caused turnovers in the win. Jen Sandtorv made six saves in goal in earning the victory.
Sacred Heart will be back in action on Sunday afternoon, March 18th when they host Villanova at 2:00 pm
