Sacred Heart Pioneers (3-5, 1-2 NEC) vs. Mt. St. Mary's Mountaineers (2-6, 2-0 NEC)
Sunday, April 1, 2007 - 1:00 pm - Emmitsburg, Maryland - Waldron Family Stadium
SHU Ready to Face The Mount... The Sacred Heart Pioneers continue their weekend road trip Sunday afternoon taking on the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers looking to snap a two-game Northeast Conference losing streak. SHU is coming off an 11-8 loss to league leader Monmouth on Friday where they fell behind 8-1 before a late second half run got them back in the game. The Mount is 2-0 in the NEC after starting the year 0-6 in non-conference play.
The Series... The Mount leads the all-time series, 8-2. Sacred Heart snapped a three-game Mount winning streak last season with an 8-7 win at home. Previously, SHU's lone win in the series came during the 2002 season, 13-8 also at home. The series dates back to the 1998 season with Mount St. Mary's also winning the only playoff meeting, 6-5, during the 2004 NEC Tournament.
Up Next... The Pioneers return home on Thursday, April 5th to take on NEC foe Wagner College at 3:00 pm.
Last Meeting with Mt. St. Mary's... Sacred Heart goalie Candice Celebre made 11 saves including the game clincher with 0.7 seconds remaining as she turned away Katie Falatach to send the Pioneers home with an 8-7 victory over Mount St. Mary's on April 7th last season. Sacred Heart finished the day four-of-seven on free position shots and got four goals from junior Brianna Bubeck in the win. The Pioneers led, 4-2, into halftime and came out of the break and built their biggest lead, 5-2, off the stick of Bubeck. The Mount offense found their legs and began a four goal run to take their first lead of the game, 6-5. The lead was short lived as SHU buried two goals in the span of 1:21 to go up 7-6. SHU dug in defensively and had a chance to run out the clock on offense but a turnover with 1:07 left gave the Mount life. After a scramble in front, Kathleen Rossetti emerged with the ball and bounced a shot in with 15 ticks left to pull her team to within one, 8-7. The Mount took the ensuing draw and set up for one last attempt. Falatch was able to draw the Sacred Heart foul with just 0.7 seconds left and she set up just inside the circle to take on last ditch shot. Falatch let fire low and hard at the whistle and the ball got to net but SHU's Celebre smothered it as the horn sounded to preserve the Pioneer victory.
Scouting the Mountaineers... The Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse team opened the season with six-straight losses but since Northeast Conference play has started, the Mountaineers have rattled of a pair of wins over St. Francis (PA) and Wagner. In last Friday's win over LIU, Bubeck led the offensive charge with four goals and an assist in the win, registering her 100th career point. In addition, she collected seven draw controls, four ground balls and caused two turnovers. In Sunday's loss, she matched her career high by scoring five goals against Robert Morris.
