POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Marist College sophomore Stephanie Garland had a game high five goals and junior Lindsey Diener added four markers and five assists as the Red Foxes posted a 22-13 win over visiting Sacred Heart on Tuesday afternoon.
The first half was a back and forth affair that saw the score tied six times, as the teams went to the half tied at 8-8. Sacred Heart opened the scoring in the second half on a goal by Carissa Hauser just 32 seconds into the frame. After Hauser scored again at 23:38 to tie the game at 11-11, the Red Foxes reeled off six straight goals. Diener scored three of those goals and assisted on two others.
The Pioneers would cut the Red Fox lead to 17-13 with 13:23 left to play on back to back goals from Hauser and Katie Salamone, but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the game. Following Salamone's goal the Red Foxes posted the last five scores of the game, including two by Garland, to earn the 22-13 win.
Marist out shot the Pioneers 43-41 in the game and were also successful on 16 of their 18 clear attempts in the contest. The Foxes converted four of 10 free positions shots, but Sacred Heart took a 21-16 advantage in draw controls in the contest.
The Pioneers got four goals apiece from Hauser and senior Brianna Bubeck. Hauser added a pair of assists to her four goals for a career-high six point afternoon. Sophomores Mary Montesarchio and Amanda Williams came up with a pair of goals each.
The 22 goals were the highest allowed in any game this season by the Pioneers as they now turn their attention solely to Northeast Conference play. SHU will travel to Quinnipiac on Friday afternoon in a key NEC tilt with the hunt for one of four playoff spots heats up.
