
Pioneers Clinch NEC Playoff Berth with 17-10 Win at CCSU

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (April 22, 2007) - The Sacred Heart Pioneers got four goals and three assists from senior Brianna Bubeck (Bethlehem, NY) on the way to a 17-10 win at Central Connecticut Sunday afternoon, clinching a spot in next weekend's Northeast Conference Tournament. The Pioneers finished tied for third place with Quinnipiac, both at 5-3, and will be the #3 seed in the tournament field.
Mount St. Mary's (8-0) will be the #1 seed and host all three games starting next Friday. The Pioneers will match-up with #2 seed Monmouth (7-1) in the semifinals.
SHU (7-7, 5-3 NEC) dominated the first half, out shooting Central 23-8 while breaking 14 of the Blue Devil's 16 clear attempts. It was CCSU who struck first and took a 2-1 lead less then three minutes in but it was all Sacred Heart from there.
The Pioneers rang off a seven goal run to lead 8-2 and never look back. SHU's lead peaked at 10 in the second half, 17-7, before CCSU closed the game with three-straight to produce the final. SHU held a 40-22 advantage on shots in the game and took the ground ball battle 23-16.
In addition to Bubeck's big afternoon, junior Katie Salamone (Baltimore, MD) scored four times and added an assist to her final totals. Sophomores Mary Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) and Amanda Williams (Monroe, CT) each scored two goals while Monteasarchio assisted on two others. Junior Liz Ottey (Baltimore, MD) finished with two scores and three assists in the win.
Central Connecticut's (3-11, 1-6 NEC) got four goals and an assist from Julia Steier and three markers and a helper from Stephanie John.
