FAIRFIELD, CT (March 22, 2008) - The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team got three goals and two assists from senior Liz Ottey (Baltimore, MD) and used another solid performance in goal by sophomore Chelsea Wagner (Aurora, CO) to come away with an 11-10 win over Mount St. Mary's on Campus Field Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers had a three-goal lead late in the second half but needed to hold off a hard charging Mountaineer team in the closing seconds to come away with the win and improve to 2-0 in early Northeast Conference action.
The Mount (4-5, 1-1 NEC) came out fast and opened the scoring with a Rebecca Douglass goal just 37 seconds into the game. The Pioneers (4-5, 2-0 NEC) settled in and responded with a three-goal run that included markers from sophomore Carissa Hauser (East Northport, NY), Ottey and junior Mary Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) for a 3-1 lead six and a half minutes in.
After a Mountaineer goal from Breana Waraksa at 22:55, the Pioneers rattled off another three-straight to take a 6-2 lead with 12:25 left in the first half. Junior Amanda Williams (Monroe, CT) and Ottey scored back-to-back 8meter free position goals at 20:24 and 14:20. Ottey finished off the rally at 12:25 with her third of the half, unassisted. Mount's top-scorer Katelyn Catanese got her game going with a pair of goals to answer the SHU run but freshman Jessica Ingrilli (Wantagh, NY) made it 7-4 Pioneers at the half with an 8meter goal of her own with 1:30 left.
Sacred Heart took their biggest lead of the afternoon just out of the break as Hauser scored her second on the afternoon off a feed from Ottey at 25:18 for a four-goal advantage, 8-4. The Mountaineers cut that lead in half but the 12 minute mark after scored by Lucy Pompa and Rebecca Douglass. The two teams traded a pair of goals over the next five and a half minutes with SHU's Alyssa Harris (Kings Park, NY) and Meghan McCaffrey (Garden City, NY) answering Mount scores.
Catanese tacked on her third of the day at 6:36 to pull her team back to within two scores, 10-8, at the 6:36 mark. SHU's Williams pushed the lead back to three, 11-8, with an unassisted goal at 4:30. The Pioneers took control of the ball after the ensuing draw and looked like they may be able to run out the clock but a costly turnover late gave the Mount a chance for a comeback with under two minutes to go.
The Mount looked to Catanese to carry them back and the junior midfield almost completed the task. Catanese scored her fourth at 1:46 off a feed from Waraksa and then tacked on her game-high fifth with 41 seconds left after the Mount took the ensuing draw. Mount St. Mary's also won the final draw of the game and looked to set up for the tying score. The Pioneer defense clamped down however and force a loose ball just as the horn sounded to preserve the victory.
In addition to Ottey's five point day, both Hauser and Williams tacked on a pair of goals while Montesarchio scored one and assisted on another. The Pioneers were three-of-five on 8meter attempts on the day.
The Pioneers are right back at home on Tuesday, March 25th when they play host to the Lafayette Leopards at 3:00 pm.
