WORCESTER, Mass. (April 16, 2008) - The Holy Cross Crusaders scored five-straight goals to close the first half and warded off every attempt by Sacred Heart to post a comeback in the second half to come away with a 13-9 win Wednesday night. The three goals and an assist from sophomore Cori Horelik (South Windsor, CT) and a pair of goals and four assists from junior Mary Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) in the loss.
After a Holy Cross (5-10) goal opened the scoring just 22 seconds into play, the Pioneers (9-7) built a 4-3 lead after nearly 17 minutes of action. Junior Amanda Williams (Monroe, CT) and Montesarchio buried back-to-back goals at 28:38 and 27:52 for a 2-1 advantage. Montesarchio then set up teammate senior Alyssa Harris (Kings Park, NY) at 13:54 followed by her second marker of the day at 13:19 for a 4-3 lead.
That would be the Pioneers last goal of the half as the Crusaders got off on their five-goal run to take the lead back for good. Nikki Bolduc started the rally at 12:49 and ended it at 6:24 to guide her team to an 8-4 lead at the half.
HC's Kristine Corkum made it six-straight to open the second half just 55 seconds in to take a five-goal advantage. The Pioneers finally broke through offensively, snapping nearly a 21 minute scoring drough as Horelik scored her first of three at 22:04. SHU's Liz Ottey (Baltimore, MD) made it 9-6 with an 8meter goal at 9:43 but that was as close as the Pioneers would get.
Holy Cross pushed the lead back to four, 10-6 on Corkum's third goal and the Crusaders would go on to answer every SHU goal the rest of the way to seal the win. Holy Cross dominated on draws, winning 16 of the 24 taken. Amy Martin made eight saves in earning the win in goal.
The Pioneers will close out the regular season with a share of the Northeast Conference regular season title on the line this Sunday as they play host to Central Connecticut. Opening draw is slated for 1:00 pm.
