SHU Makes NEC Stops in Brooklyn and Staten Island... The Sacred Heart Pioneers take their five-game winning streak and 4-0 Northeast Conference record on the road again this weekend for a pair of league tilts in two of New York City's five boroughs. SHU will travel to Brooklyn on Friday afternoon to face the Long Island Blackbirds and Staten Island on Sunday for a match-up with Wagner. The Pioneers are in first place in the NEC half way through the league slate with four to go. The Blackbirds have lost four-straight since a 7-6 win over Central Connecticut in their NEC opener. The Seahawks have dropped three in a row after beating Saint Francis 22-0 for their only win on the year. Wagner is coming off back-to-back loses where they allowed more the 20 goals, 23-12 to Quinnipiac and 25-11 to Fairfield, both at home.
The SHU-LIU Series... The Pioneers lead the all-time series, 5-0. Sacred Heart won their fifth-straight last season, 13-7, at home on Campus Field. The Pioneers are 3-0 in Fairfield and 2-0 in Brooklyn against the Blackbirds. The two teams met for the first time in 2003, LIU's first season of competition, with the Pioneers posting a 10-5 on the road.
The SHU-Wagner Series... Sacred Heart leads the all-time series 7-3. The Pioneers have won two-straight in the series after a 12-10 win at home last year. The Seahawks took three of four from the Pioneers from 2002 through 2005. SHU won the first-ever meeting between the two schools in 1999, a 15-11 decision at home.
Up Next... Sacred Heart returns home next Friday April 11th to take on their NEC rival Quinnipiac on Campus Field. The Bobcats are just a game behind SHU for first place heading into this weekend's games.
Last Meeting with Long Island... Sacred Heart senior Brianna Bubeck scored four goals with an assist to lead the Pioneers to a 13-7 win over visiting Long Island in the NEC opener for both teams last season. Sacred Heart doubled up Long Island on shots, 32-16 and also held a 15-7 edge in draw controls. The Blackbirds struggled clearing the ball, managing just 11 of 21 successful clears while turning the ball over 18 times. SHU held the ground ball edge, 15-10. Junior Liz Ottey added a goal and two assists to the stat sheet.
Last Meeting with Wagner... Sacred Heart got three goals apiece from juniors Liz Ottey and Katie Salamone and withstood a late Wagner rally to post a 12-10 victory last season. The Seahawks outscored the Pioneers 6-3 in the second half but the Pioneers kept Wagner out of their offensive end over the last six minutes of play to claim victory. Ottey gave the Pioneers a 12-10 lead at the 10:05 mark, and after a pair of saves by Wagner on the Seahawk's next two possessions, the Pioneers forced a turnover at the 6:00 minute mark and never looked back, keeping the Seahawks on their side of the field the rest of the way.
Montesarchio and Ingrilli This Week's NEC Winners... After Liz Ottey and Chelsea Wagner took home two NEC Player of the Week awards last week, Mary Montesarchio and Jessica Ingrilli got into the act this week. Montesarchio was named the league's player of the week after turning in a six goals, 12 assist week, leading SHU to wins over Lafayette, Robert Morris and Saint Francis (PA). Ingrilli was named the NEC's Rookie of the Week after a pair of impressive outings against Lafayette and Robert Morris. Ingrilli had two goals, four ground balls against the Leopards and a caused turnover against Lafayette and two goals, two assists, four draw wins, three ground balls and a caused turnover against the Colonials.
SHU's 100-Point Trio... Seniors Liz Ottey and Katie Salamone and junior Mary Montesarchio all eclipsed the 100-point mark for their careers last week. Montesarchio leads all active players with 107 career points on 54 goals and 53 assists, reaching the plateau with a four goal, one assist game at Robert Morris. Salamone is right on her heels with 106 points on 86 goals and 20 assists, hitting 100 points with a career-best 8 points (5g, 3a) at SFPA. Ottey is at 101 points on 71 goals and 30 assists with her two goal, two assist against the Red Flash putting her over the top.
Montesarchio a Record Breaker... Junior Mary Montesarchio set three new school records last week. Montesarchio's seven assist afternoon against Lafayette set a new Division I record for assists in a game. She also set new marks for assists in a season and career assists. Her 23 assists thus far this season eclipsed the mark the old record of 18. She passed Jen Fallon's (1993-96) 52 career helpers over the weekend and now owns the career mark with 53 and counting.
NEC Stats... The Sacred Heart Pioneers are the top defensive team in the NEC allowing just 9.67 goals per game. The Pioneers are fourth in scoring offense (10.92) and first in shot percentage (.463). Junior Amanda Williams is fifth in the league in goals per game (27 - 2.25) and leads the conference with four game winners. Junior Mary Montesarchio is second among league leaders in assists (23) averaging 1.92 per game. Sophomore Chelsea Wagner in the league's leading goalkeeper with a 9.90 gaa, a .541 save percentage and 133 saves.
History... This is the Pioneer's 11th year of competition in the Northeast Conference. Sacred Heart has qualified for the NEC Tournament five times and posts a 94-77 Division I record. The Pioneers have posted 10 wins three times.
