Sacred Heart head women's lacrosse coach Laura Cook announced that seniors Nicole Messina (Smithtown, NY) and Elizabeth Drehwing (Wyckoff, NJ) and junior Kate Kmiotek (Farmingdale, NY) have been named team captains of the three-time Northeast Conference Champion Pioneers for the coming 2011 season.
"Liz, Kate and Nicole understand the work ethic it takes to win championships," stated Cook. "As we begin this new season, I am confident that they will guide our young team in the right direction through their dedication and commitment to the program."
The trio are coming off a third-consecutive NEC title in 2010 as
they look to lead the Pioneers back to the NEC Tournament in 2011
hunting for a fourth banner. Messina and Drehwing will lead
the SHU defensive unit while Kmiotek returns as the Pioneers
top-scorer from a season ago.
Messina and Drehwing helped anchor a league leading
defense that allowed just 8.76 goals per game last season.
Drehwing started all 19 games as a junior finishing the year second
on the team with 38 ground balls. She finished with 18 caused
turnovers and capped off a stellar season by earning a spot on the
NEC All-Tournament team. Messina started 16 of the 19 games
played in 2010, finishing with 22 ground balls, 19 caused turnovers
and six draw controls.
An All-NEC second team pick as a freshman, Kmiotek followed her rookie performance by earning a spot on the first team last season. Kmiotek finished the season tied for the team lead in goals scored with 47 on the season, ranking sixth among conference leaders. The junior midfielder totalled 58 points in 2010 from her midfield spot while also posting 24 caused turnovers, 37 ground balls and 46 draw wins.
The 2011 Pioneer women's lacrosse season will get under way on Saturday, February 26th with SHU playing host to the Brown Bears.
