Pioneers Beaten by UConn, 17-4

FAIRFIELD, CT (March 16, 2012) - The University of Connecticut women's lacrosse team built an 11-1 halftime lead on their way to a 17-4 win over Sacred Heart Friday afternoon on Campus Field. The Huskies got five goals from M.E. Lapham as they improve to 6-1 while dropping the Pioneers to 1-4 on the season.
UConn out shot the Pioneers 33-15 as Lapham scored four of her game-high five goals in the first half of play. The Huskies burst out to 5-0 lead by the midpoint of the first half, two coming off the stick of Lapham. UConn ran their lead to 7-0 at the eight minute mark as Jordan Christopher and Lapham tacked on two more.
The Pioneers broke through on a senior Kaitlin Rochler (Wading River, NY) goal off a feed from freshman Taylor Babin (Ellicott City, MD) at 6:06. The Huskies answered with a Lapham 8-meter goal and then three more scores in the final 1:39 of the half. Catherine Gross and Kiersten Tupper made it 11-1 at the half.
UConn's Morgan O'Reilly scored twice to start the second half, hitting the mark at 28:11 and 26:48 to build an unsurmountable 13-1 lead.
SHU to second half goals from Emily Pepe (East Quogue, NY), Babin and Kelsey Russo (Lindenhurst, NY).
The Pioneers are right back in action on Sunday afternoon with a trip to Holy Cross on the slate.
