Eight Pioneers Score In 15-3 Win Over St. Mary's

The Sacred Heart University women's lacrosse team closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 15-3 win over St. Mary's (CA) College. The Pioneers improve to 4-5 on the year while the Gaels fall to 0-9.
SHU took control of the game from out the outset, as Kylie Calandra scored 1:40 into the game. The Pioneers built a 6-0 lead capped by an Avera Farhat tally with 4:52 to play before intermission. St. Mary's netted a pair of free position goals in the final 2:32 of the half to cut the deficit to four, 6-2, at the intermission.
Jenna Liljeberg tallied the first goal of the second half, 1:40 into the periods, and was followed 73 seconds later by Jessyln Joseph. SHU scored nine unanswered goals during the half to put a 15-2 advantage on the board. Megan Zummo scored her second eight-meter shot for the Gaels with 14 ticks remaining to wrap up the game.
Eight different Pioneers scored a goal with six players notching multiple tallies, led by the hat trick of Farhat. She added an assist for four points, a total equaled by Caitlin Delaney, who scored twice and added two assists. Calandra had a goal and an assist in the win as well.
Kelly Keenan earned the win in net, stopping two of the four shots that she faced in 55:00 of action. Carly Cavagnaro stopped one of two shots in her five minutes of action for SHU. Sacred Heart allowed only 12 Gael shots on the afternoon. The Pioneers caused 11 turnovers on the day, while recording 17 ground balls and six draw controls.
Zummo scored twice for the Gaels, while Jaclyn Biggers added the third tally. Sydney Pinello allowed 15 goals and made six saves, along with three ground balls in her time in net. St. Mary's finished with eight caused turnovers, 13 draw controls and 14 ground balls.
Sacred Heart begins Northeast Conference play on Friday, April 3 when it travels to LIU Brooklyn. NEC play comes to Campus Field on Friday, April 10 when Bryant visits for a 3 p.m. game.
