Women's Lacrosse Earns 13-9 Win Over Robert Morris

The Sacred Heart University women's lacrosse team scored the final four goals of the game to earn a 13-9 win over Northeast Conference foe Robert Morris University Friday afternoon on Campus Field. The victory improves the Pioneers to 6-9 overall and 2-4 in league play, while the Colonials fall to 9-6 on the season and 2-4 in conference action.
Robert Morris scored consecutive goals 61 seconds apart with 12:39 and 11:38 to play in regulation to tie the game, 9-9. Jesslyn Joseph tallied her fourth goal of the game, with 9:23 to play to put SHU in front for good, 10-9. Caitlin Delaney struck for back-to-back tallies, 51 seconds apart, to push the advantage to 12-9 with 6:41 to play. Paige DeVine scored with 4:32 to play for the 13-9 margin and SHU maintained possession for nearly the remainder of the game to secure the victory.
Joseph led the Pioneers with a five-point effort, tallying four goals on the afternoon, with three coming in the second half of play. Delaney recorded three of her four goals in the second-half as well, while DeVine finished with three points on a goal and two assists. Averi Farhat recorded her second hat trick and Kylie Calandra finished with a goal and an assist for the Pioneers.
Kelly Keenan earned the win in net for SHU, with a three save effort. Hallie Yancey started and played 50:37, allowing 10 goals, against five saves for Robert Morris. Mackenzie Duffy minded the net for the final 9:23, giving up three goals against one save.
SHU scored the first three goals of the game with Delaney opening the scoring 21 seconds into the contest. Farhat followed at 27:36 and Joseph struck at 20:31 for what proved to be the largest lead of the game until the final margin. Robert Morris cut the deficit to 3-2, before Farhat scored with 10:55 to play in the first-half, which was followed 21 seconds later by a Calandra score for a 5-2 Pioneer lead. SHU took a 5-4 lead into the break after Emily Jamison scored with 2:36 remaining in the half for the Colonials.
Joseph opened the second-half scoring at the 28:34 mark, for a 6-4 edge, but starting a flurry of scoring. Dana Davis scored for RMU 19 seconds later, which was followed by a Joseph goal 13 seconds after that, to keep SHU in front, 7-5. Nearly 10:00 later Davis struck for the first of back-to-back Colonial goals to tie the score, 7-7, with 17:04 to play in regulation. Delaney and Farhat scored 28 seconds apart to give the Pioneers a 9-7 edge with 15:08 to play, setting up the final rush of scoring.
Seven different Colonials scored goals on the afternoon, with Davis and Jamison each striking twice. Brittany Byerly led the way with three points on a goal and an assist. Jessica Karwacki led the team with four draw controls.
The Pioneers close out the regular season on Sunday, hosting Saint Francis University at 1:00 p.m. on Campus Field. The game will be preceded by a ceremony honoring the Pioneers three seniors, beginning at 12:50.
