
Women's Lacrosse And Swimming Earn Team Academic Awards

The Sacred Heart swimming and diving team and women's lacrosse team were recognized this summer by their respective coaches organizations for academic success.
The swim team posted a 3.44 GPA in the Spring 2015 semesters to earn the Scholar All-America honor from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). It marked the second semester that head coach John Spadafina's squad ranked among the top-50 in the nation in team GPA.
The women's lacrosse team is one of 83 programs' to earn the Academic Honor Squad designation from the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association. Head coach Laura Cook's squad surpassed a team GPA of 3.0 to earn the accolade.
The award are a showcase of the academic success of Pioneer athletics. SHU earned the Northeast Conference Institutional Academic Award. The Pioneers' 22 NEC teams combined for a grade point average of 3.279 in 2014-15. Across all 31 varsity sports the Pioneers had 51 student-athletes post a semester GPA of 4.00 during the year, with 467 earning Dean's Lists recognition. In addition, 423 student-athletes were recognized with academic honors by their respective conference.
During the 2014-15 season four Pioneers earned their respective sports' NEC Scholar-Athlete Award. Phil Gaetano earned the men's basketball award for the third consecutive time, while James Cooksey, baseball, earned the honor for the second consecutive spring. Sean Bell, football, and Jesslyn Joseph, women's lacrosse, earned the accolade for the first time.
