
Women's Lacrosse Drops Season Opener At Marist

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team opened its 2016 season Monday with a 15-12 loss to the Marist Red Foxes at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field.
Caitlin Delaney led the Pioneers with four goals and added an assist for five points. She also had a team-high four ground balls. Alyssa Pearce had two goals, two assists, and three ground balls. Paige Hammick made seven saves in goal.
Sacred Heart (0-1) got off to a fast start as goals by Joseph and Delaney put the Pioneers ahead 2-0 6:54 into the game. After Marist (1-0) tied the game 2-2, Sacred Heart went on a 3-0 run capped off by a Kylie Calandra goal to take a 5-2 lead with 13:36 to play in the first half. The Red Foxes responded with a 6-0 run over the next 9:13 to take an 8-5 lead with 4:23 remaining in the half. Averi Farhat cut the deficit to two before halftime, as her free position goal made the score 8-6 with 4:10 to go.
Marist opened the second half on a 4-1 run with a Hayley Burke goal making the score 12-7 with 22:31 to play. Delaney then scored three of the next four goals to get SHU back within three, 13-10, with 11:22 to go. The two sides then traded goals with the Red Foxes winning 15-12.
The Pioneers outshot Marist 35-27. The Red Foxes held the edge in ground balls 18-17. Allison Gionta led all players with eight goals and three assists. Kara McHugh added six goals. Goalie Abigail Witczak made 13 saves.
Sacred Heart is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 20 at Holy Cross at 1 p.m.
