
Farhat's Four Goals Lead SHU To Win Over La Salle

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sophomore Averi Farhat scored a season-high four goals Friday as the Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team earned an 11-10 win over the La Salle Explorers at Campus Field.
Farhat's four points led all scorers Friday. Caitlin Delaney and Jenna Liljeberg each had two goals, two caused turnovers, and an assist. Paige Hammick made five of her six saves in the second half to earn the win in goal.
La Salle (0-5) and Sacred Heart traded goals to open the game, as Farhat's first tally tied the game 1-1 with 25:35 remaining in the first half. Brittany Edwards scored back-to-back goals to give the Explorers a 4-2 lead with 22:12 left in the first, with Allie Ilgenfritz capping a three-goal La Salle run at the 18:37 mark. Liana Doyle sparked a 5-1 Pioneers run with 17:03 to play. Delaney put SHU up 6-5 11 minutes later with a free position goal. La Salle tied the game with 4:47 to go on a Katelyn Fay free position goal as the two teams went into halftime tied 6-6.
Sacred Heart came out firing to start the second half. Alyssa Pierce put the Pioneers ahead 7-6 less than four minutes into the half. Delaney, Farhat, and Jesslyn Joseph all followed with goals of their own to put SHU up 10-6 with 22:49 remaining in the game. La Salle came back to make the score 10-8 with 8:28 to go on goals by Anna Kelly and Katie Fonte. Liljeberg gave Sacred Heart a three-goal lead at the 6:39 mark, as her second goal of the day put the score at 11-8. La Salle was able to cut the deficit to one with 3:48 to go, but was not able to force overtime.
La Salle outshot Sacred Heart 19-18, with each team collecting 10 groundballs. The Pioneers forced 19 turnovers while committing only 16. Ilgenfritz led the Explorers with three goals.
Sacred Heart is back in action on Sunday, March 20 at Binghamton at 12 p.m.
FIRST HALF
- Doyle's goal at the 17:03 mark was her second of the season and ended a 3-0 La Salle run.
- Farhat had three of her four goals in the first half, with her third goal at the 8:49 mark giving her 10 on the season.
- SHU went on a 4-0 run over a span of 7:42 in the first half. Liljeberg, Farhat, and Delaney all scored on free position shots during that spurt.
- Delaney's goal at the 6:03 mark was her 20th of the season.
SECOND HALF
- SHU opened the half on a 4-0 run over a span of 3:14
- Joseph's goal at the 22:49 mark was her 10th of the season. Liljeberg recorded her first assist of the year on the goal.
- La Salle had the ball with 0:24 left and a chance to tie, but could not score.
