Werlau, McElhenny and Reinold will play in game on Saturday
NORTHBOROUGH, Mass.— The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association announced its two teams for the 2023 Senior All-Star Game on Thursday. Sacred Heart University women's lacrosse team members Lydia Werlau, Claire McElhenny, and Grace Reinold were selected as participants.
McElhenny will be on the North Team, while Reinold and Werlau are a part of the South Team. They are the first Pioneers in program history since Carissa Hauser and Chelsea Wagner in 2010 to be a part of the event.
"What a well-deserved honor for Lydia, Claire, and Grace to be able to close out their collegiate careers by being chosen to play and represent Sacred Heart University in the IWLCA DI Senior All-Star Game," said head coach Laura Korutz. "It is a true testament to the hard work, dedication, and commitment they showed day in and day out throughout their time at SHU."
All three players are coming off a tremendous season, that included winning SHU's first Northeast Conference title in a decade. They were also members of First Team All-NEC. Werlau, the league's 2023 Offensive Player of the Year and tournament Most Valuable Player, was the scoring leader for the Pioneers with 71 points on 55 goals and 16 assists. This season, the Brewster N.Y., native broke the program's Division I record in goals (183) and points (232). Werlau reached the 200th career point milestone at CCSU on Mar. 29. She also earned back-to-back NEC Offensive Player of the Week on Mar. 13 and 27.
McElhenny has been dominant on the defensive end this season, leading SHU with 64 draw controls, 52 ground balls, and 36 caused turnovers. The Davidsonville, Md., native is currently the school's all-time DI program leader in draw controls, which she achieved the previous season. On Apr. 29, McElhenny won a career-high 11 draw controls against Merrimack, which put her at the 200th mark in her career. On Apr. 27, she was named the NEC Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career. McElhenny was also named to the All-Tournament Team after helping SHU win the league title.
Reinold, SHU's third-leading scorer, recorded 46 points on 36 goals and 10 assists while notching six caused turnovers and nine ground balls. The Braintree, Mass., native scored her 100th career point at Quinnipiac (Feb. 15) and 100th career goal against Wagner (Apr. 12).
The Senior All-Star games will be held on Tierney Field at USA Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Md., on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
