Pioneers look to repeat as NEC Champs
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – After winning its fourth Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship in 2023, the Sacred Heart University women's lacrosse team was selected as the favorite in the NEC Preseason Coaches' Poll on Thursday afternoon.
The Pioneers concluded the 2023 season with an 11-8 overall record and an unblemished 8-0 mark in league action. SHU has registered double-digit victories in seven seasons under head coach Laura Korutz, while also earning its fifth regular-season title. Sacred Heart entered the NEC Tournament as the No. 1 seed and defeated Wagner by a 7-6 margin in a thrilling come-from-behind win in the championship contest.
The Pioneers were picked to repeat as league champions after receiving nine first-place nods from the league coaches. Conference runner-up, Wagner garnered one first-place vote and sits second in the poll, while LIU was slotted third. Saint Francis U was picked fourth and Stonehill rounded out the top five in the rankings.
Ranking sixth in the ledger is league newcomer Le Moyne, who received the final first-place vote, followed by Merrimack and CCSU in seventh and eighth, respectively. Concluding the preseason poll is Delaware State in ninth, FDU in 10th, and Howard in 11th.
The Pioneers open the 2024 season on Sunday, Feb. 11, with a home non-conference contest against UMass Lowell. Game time is set for 12:00 PM at Campus Field.
