Araneo was named Player of the Week and Black earned Defensive Player of the Week
SOMERSET, N.J. – In a game that showcased its dominance, the Sacred Heart University women's lacrosse team secured two prestigious weekly Northeast Conference (NEC) honors. Maggie Araneo was crowned NEC Player of the Week, while Maci Black was hailed as Defensive Player of the Week.
The Pios played one game last week, defeating Wagner College on the road Saturday afternoon in overtime by a final score of 11-10. Saturday's win put the Pioneers in prime position to repeat as NEC regular season champs as well as extended their winning streak to seven straight. A victory against Central Connecticut on Wednesday, April 24, will secure at least a share of the crown and the top seed in the postseason.
Araneo, in a stunning display of skill, earned her first NEC weekly award by scoring the game-winning goal just 35 seconds into overtime. The sophomore attacker from Merrick, NY, led the scoring charts with six points, courtesy of four goals and two assists. Araneo, who piloted the Pios to the NEC Championship in 2023 after she delivered the game-winning goal in the final seconds of regulation against Wagner in the title game, came up big once again for her team on Saturday.
Black's stellar play on Sacred Heart's backline propelled the junior to her first NEC weekly honor this season. The Spring Lake, NJ defender caused a season-best four turnovers to help lead the Pioneers to the overtime win. In addition to her caused turnover production, Black collected a season-best four ground balls.
