Women’s Lacrosse Topped by Siena on Senior Day

The Pios honored its seven-member senior class
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University women's lacrosse team suffered its second straight loss on Saturday afternoon at Campus as the Pioneers came up short, 7-6, to Siena in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) clash on Senior Day.
Prior to the start of the game, head coach Laura Korutz and the women's lacrosse team honored its seven-member senior class – Aidan Carlson, Maggie Barr, Shae Insinga, Lisa Martin, Maci Black, Claire Ferguson, and Leah Durkin – for their hard work and dedication to the program over their tenure.
Offensively, the Pioneers were led by Insinga and Tanner, who finished the day with three points behind two goals and an assist. Madelyn Breitbeil recorded a strong defensive performance for the Pioneers causing five of the 17 Siena turnovers.

How it Happened:
Siena jumped out to a commanding two-goal lead, 2-0, after back-to-back goals from Elizabeth Wamp, less than a minute apart. However, Sacred Heart slowly began to build momentum and capitalized offensively when Jamie Tanner found the back of the net at 8:48 for her first goal of the day. Shortly after, a draw control win by Insigna and a Saints foul awarded Maggie Araneo a free-position shot, which she converted to even the game at 2-2.
Solid defensive work, especially from both keepers kept the score deadlocked at 2-2 heading into the second period.
Sacred Heart gained the upper hand, outscoring Siena 3-1 over the next 15 minutes of play to take a 5-3 lead at halftime. Insigna highlighted the period with a pair of goals just 1:13 apart, while Erin Herrold netted her fourth goal of the season, on an assist by Tanner.
Despite five shot attempts, including three shots on goal, the Pioneers were unable to find the back of the net, but the Saints managed to sneak two past Martin to even the game at 5-5 at the end of the third.
The fourth quarter was a nail-biter, filled with intense back-and-forth action as both teams exchanged goals. However, Siena managed to keep the Pioneers off the scoreboard for the final 5:56 after a free-position goal from Jamie Tanner and Olivia Nicholson secured the win with a woman-up goal at 2:30, ultimately securing a thrilling road win.
