Pioneers erase deficit twice before decisive third quarter
CONWAY, S.C. – The Sacred Heart University women's lacrosse team kicked off its spring break trip down south, falling short to Coastal Carolina University, 13-9, in non-conference play Wednesday afternoon at Brooks Stadium.
Jamie Tanner led Sacred Heart with three goals and an assist, while Melina Lange recorded two goals and two assists. Maggie Araneo finished with two goals, and Ellie Edwards and Madeline Lively added one apiece.

How it Happened:
Coastal Carolina opened the scoring with two early goals, but Sacred Heart answered midway through the first quarter when Tanner buried a man-up finish off a feed from Ryann Kearns to cut the deficit to 2-1. However, Coastal Carolina restored their two-goal lead at the end of the first, 3-1.
The second quarter featured a back-and-forth stretch as Coastal Carolina struck first to extend its lead to 4-1. Sacred Heart responded with a pair of goals in less than two minutes, as Araneo finished a pass from Lange before converting a man-up opportunity off a feed from Tanner to make it 4-3.
After Coastal pushed the margin back to two, Edwards connected on a free-position shot, and Tanner followed with an unassisted goal to knot the game at 5-5.
The Pioneers grabbed their first lead of the afternoon moments later when Lange converted a free-position attempt with 3:36 remaining in the half. Coastal Carolina countered quickly with two late goals in the final 1:43 to reclaim a 7-6 advantage heading into intermission.
Out of the break, Coastal Carolina controlled the tempo and opened the third quarter with a three-goal run to stretch the lead to 10-6. Sacred Heart halted the surge when Tanner finished from Lange with 4:39 left in the frame, trimming the deficit to 10-7.
The hosts carried the momentum into the fourth, scoring early to go up 11-7. Sacred Heart mounted another push as Lively buried a free-position shot and Lange capitalized on a man-up opportunity off an assist from Jenna Lively to pull within 11-9.
Coastal Carolina, however, answered with two goals in a five-minute span and sealed the contest with a man-up tally in the final minute.
