
Pioneers Rally In Second Half For 15-12 Win At La Salle

PHILADELPHIA – The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team earned its first win of the 2017 season Saturday, rallying in the second half for a 15-12 win over the La Salle Explorers at McCarthy Stadium.
Averi Farhat led SHU with four goals. Alyssa Pearce had five points on three goals and two assists. Caitlin Delaney had two goals and an assist, grabbing seven draw controls. Erin Coutts and Anna Finn each had two points apiece.
La Salle (1-1) scored two goals in the first 2:40, prompting an early SHU timeout. Sacred Heart got on the scoreboard with 25:16 remaining in the first half on a goal by Coutts. Finn scored from a free position at the 15:32 mark to make the score 3-2. The Explorers then scored three straight goals from Brittany Edwards, Rachel Ceplo, and Allee Ilgenfritz to take a 6-2 lead with 7:55 to play in the half. The Pioneers traded goals with La Salle for the rest of the half, as tallies by Pearce and Kylie Calandra made the score 8-4 at halftime.
Sacred Heart (1-1) opened the second half on a 3-1 run over the first 6:36, as goals by Pearce and Farhat made the score 9-7. After an Ilgenfritz goal gave La Salle a 10-7 lead with 21:38 to play, the Pioneers scored six unanswered goals over the next 12 minutes to take a 13-10 lead. Nicole Holder put the Pioneers in the lead at the 11:08 mark, as Pearce assisted on her first career goal to make the score 11-10. Farhat scored the final two goals of the run to give SHU a three-goal lead. The Explorers cut the deficit to one, 13-12, with 5:58 to go but the Pioneers' defense halted La Salle from there. Sacred Heart tacked on two more goals from Farhat and Caitlin Delaney to win 15-12.
La Salle outshot Sacred Heart 33-25 in the game. SHU had 17 draw controls to the Explorers' 10. Paige Hammick made 14 saves in goal for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers take on Quinnipiac in their home opener at Campus Field on Wednesday, March 1 at 3 p.m.
