SHU improves to 5-1 in NEC play

TEANECK, N.J. - The Sacred Heart University women's lacrosse team extended its winning streak to four straight as the Pioneers defeated the FDU Knights, 10-7, on the road Saturday afternoon in Northeast Conference (NEC) action. With the win, the Pioneers improve to 5-1 in conference play, while the Knights drop to 1-6.

The Pioneers had four players - Emma Kittredge, Shae Insinga, Kelly Nolan, and Maggie Araneo - tally two goals in the win. Defensively, the Pioneers were led by Maci Black, who recorded a team-high three caused turnovers. Junior Leah Durkin finished with a season-high five draw controls, extending her career total to 99.

Junior keeper Lisa Martin finished the afternoon with six saves and earned her sixth win between the pipes.

Of Note:
FDU controlled the opening 15 minutes of play as the hosts held the early one-goal advantage, 2-1, following a pair of goals from Jordan Santana. The Pioneers' lone goal of the first period came from Kittredge with 11:45 on the clock.

Less than three minutes into the second, a man-up, free-position goal from Nolan evened the game at 2-2, but 24 seconds later, Riley Eaton put the Knights ahead, 3-2, scoring her seventh goal of the season.

The Pioneers continued to attack the net as the visitors rallied off eight shot attempts, including four shots on goal, over the next 10 minutes. A free-position shot from Ryann Kearns at 2:53 broke the visitors' scoring drought and evened the game for the third time, 3-3. SHU was not done scoring as Taylor Farace found Insinga, who found the back of the net 53 seconds later to give the Pioneers the one-goal advantage, 4-3, at the half.

The third period saw five different Pios score a goal and extended the visitors' lead to six, 9-3, heading into the final 15 minutes of regulation.

FDU started the final frame with back-to-back goals from Addie Weidner and Santana to trim the deficit to within four, 9-5. However, Araneo found an opening against the Knights keeper, doubling the Pioneers' lead 10-5 with 8:35 left in regulation.

Shortly after, FDU countered back with a 2-0 scoring spurt, but solid defensive work from both Martin and the Pioneers held off the Knights to secure the road win.

The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday, April 10, with a afternoon road tilt against the Warriors of Merrimack College. Game time is set for 3:00 PM in North Andover, Mass.
