How it Happened:
Although the Pioneers outshot the Golden Griffins by a 6-3 margin in the first period, they managed just one goal—courtesy of Bernhardt, who capitalized on a brilliant feed from Sadie Stevens—leaving the game tied at 1-1 heading into the second.
SHU's first lead of the day came at 13:36 when Jenna Lively, with sheer determination, capitalized on a free position attempt. But a minute later, Canisius evened the game at 2-2. Soon after, Tanner regained the Pioneers' lead, scoring her 14th goal of the season for the one-goal advantage, 3-2, with 11:38 left on the clock.
From there, momentum shifted in favor of the hosts as they scored four unanswered goals before Black closed out the period with a free position goal on a woman-up opportunity, bringing the visitors to within three, 6-4, at the half.
Similar to the first period, both teams were held offensively to just one goal, with Canisius holding the two-goal lead, 7-5, at the end of the third.
Undeterred by the Golden Griffins' lead, the Pioneers rallied in the fourth quarter, outscoring their opponents 3-2 and forcing two ties. Their resilience was palpable. However, with just a second left on the clock, Megan Previdi's shot attempt managed to slip past Martin for the game-winning goal, handing the Pioneers their first conference loss.
Up Next:
The Pioneers return home to Campus Field on Saturday, April 5th with a weekend showdown against Siena on Senior Day. First draw is set for 1PM, while the Senior Day ceremony begins at 12:45pm.
