SHU battles back to take fourth-quarter lead before Stags secure MAAC win in overtime
FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team came up just short in a critical Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) showdown on Wednesday afternoon, falling to crosstown rival Fairfield, 8-7, in overtime on Campus Field.
Ryann Kearns led the Pioneers with a hat trick and added an assist, while Jamie Tanner recorded two goals. Maggie Araneo paced the offense with three assists. In goal, Madalynn Eder-Linell made nine saves, anchoring a Sacred Heart defense that forced 14 turnovers.

How it Happened:
The Pioneers struck first just under a minute into the contest, as Kearns finished a feed from Araneo to give Sacred Heart an early 1-0 lead. Fairfield responded quickly, however, scoring twice in the opening quarter and adding three more in the second to take a 5-2 advantage into halftime.
Sacred Heart began its comeback in the third quarter, getting goals from Erin Herrold and Nadine Galiano to cut the deficit to one, 5-4.
After Fairfield extended its lead early in the fourth,6-4, the Pioneers surged ahead with three unanswered goals.
Tanner netted her second of the game on a free-position opportunity before Kearns scored back-to-back goals to give Sacred Heart a 7-6 lead with under six minutes remaining.
Fairfield answered with the equalizer at the 4:54 mark of the fourth quarter to force overtime.
In the extra period, Fairfield capitalized on a woman-up opportunity, scoring the game-winner with 3:27 remaining to secure the 8-7 decision.
